American Indian Policy Institute: Social Media Strategy

The American Indian Policy Institute (AIPI) is a college-level unit within ASU’s Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, dedicated to advancing policy research and strategic communication in partnership with Tribal Nations. With a clear understanding that much of its audience was already online, AIPI set out to grow its digital footprint. I led a three-part strategy to increase discoverability and credibility:

  • Elevate brand recognition by creating a strong, consistent visual identity that stands out on social media.

  • Use storytelling to pull in new readers through platform-specific content.

  • Experiment with new formats including short-form video, slideshows, and informational graphics to meet users where they are.

Organic Social Media Discovery Strategy

Our digital strategy paid off quickly. In less than a year, AIPI’s social media following grew by over 130%, and post engagement more than tripled across platforms. Content that once averaged under 150 views began consistently reaching 1,000+ viewers, with click-through rates doubling to nearly 9%.

We also expanded AIPI’s visibility beyond its follower base—on Instagram, over 50% of viewers were non-followers, a major improvement from less than 10%. These gains positioned AIPI as a go-to source for updates on Tribal policy and digital sovereignty.
